K-Pop Powerhouse 'Stray Kids' Dominates the Box Office, But Is This Just a Temporary Truce Before the Super Bowl Storm?
This past weekend at the box office was a bit of a quiet affair, with the big movie studios playing it safe and holding back their major releases. Understandably, they're not exactly eager to go head-to-head with the undeniable viewership juggernaut that is the Super Bowl, which took center stage on Sunday. This cautious approach left the door wide open for the K-pop concert film, “Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience,” to surge to the very top of the charts.
“Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience,” a cinematic journey that chronicles the electrifying world tour of the popular K-pop group and captures their unforgettable, sold-out performance at the iconic SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, raked in an estimated $3 million on Friday alone. This impressive haul came from 1,724 theaters across North America, and projections suggest the film will reach a domestic total of $5 million by the end of the weekend.
But here's where it gets interesting...
Taking the second spot was “Send Help,” a film that managed to earn $2.8 million on its second Friday. However, this represented a significant 61% drop from its opening day performance. This bloody comedy-thriller from Disney and 20th Century features a quirky, survival-savvy employee (played by Rachel McAdams) and her rather obnoxious younger boss (Dylan O’Brien) who find themselves stranded together on a deserted island. The film is expected to add between $9 million and $10 million by Sunday, bringing its total domestic gross to a respectable $34 million. Despite landing at No. 2 on Friday, “Send Help” is actually anticipated to win the entire weekend in terms of overall earnings.
And this is the part most people miss...
Securing the third position was Angel Studios' brand-new release, “Solo Mio.” This romantic comedy pulled in an estimated $2.7 million from a substantial 3,052 theaters. The film, which stars Kevin James as a man who, after being left at the altar, decides to embark on his honeymoon solo, is projected to earn $6.6 million by Sunday.
It's worth noting that Angel Studios has made quite a splash in the theatrical market. They were the driving force behind the surprise 2023 hit, “Sound of Freedom,” which went on to gross an astonishing $250 million worldwide. Their recent slate also includes titles like “David,” “The Senior,” and “Grow.”
Landing at No. 4 on Friday, according to rival estimates, was “Iron Lung.” This feature directorial debut from YouTube sensation Mark “Markiplier” Fischbach garnered $2.04 million domestically. This figure signifies a substantial 77% decline from its opening day earnings. Based on a popular 2022 indie horror game, the film plunges viewers into a post-apocalyptic future where a convict must navigate a terrifying ocean of blood to scavenge for survival. “Iron Lung” is expected to reach $5.7 million by Sunday, pushing its domestic total to $30.7 million.
Here's a point that might spark some debate: Fischbach wasn't just the director; he also co-directed with the game's developer, David Szymanski. Furthermore, he took on roles as writer, editor, executive producer, distributor, financier, and even starred in the film. After “Iron Lung” initially grossed a modest $21 in its debut, Fischbach shared an incredibly emotional thank you to his fans live on his YouTube channel. Is this level of multi-tasking a sign of true creative vision, or does it dilute the final product?
In a more distant seventh place, the horror genre saw a new entrant with “The Strangers: Chapter 3.” This film grossed $1.58 million on Friday from 2,565 North American theaters. As the third and final installment in the rebooted “Strangers” trilogy, it's projected to earn $3.8 million by Sunday. The film, starring Madelain Petsch, Gabriel Basso, Froy Gutierrez, and Ema Horvath, centers on a young woman who becomes the target of a relentless trio of masked attackers. The original “Strangers” film debuted in 2008, followed by a sequel in 2018. The reboot trilogy kicked off in 2024 with “The Strangers: Chapter 1,” and “The Strangers: Chapter 2” arrived in September 2025. Those initial films posted opening day grosses of $5.1 million and $2.4 million, respectively.
Rounding out the top five at the No. 5 spot was Vertical's “Dracula,” helmed by “Fifth Element” director Luc Besson. This film earned $2.03 million on Friday, according to rival estimates, and is expected to sink its teeth into $4.1 million by Sunday. Caleb Landry Jones portrays the iconic bloodsucker, with Christoph Waltz stepping into the role of his arch-nemesis, Van Helsing.
