In a thrilling conclusion to the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open, Alexander Bublik has secured his ninth title on the ATP Tour and his fifth championship since June. This victory came at the expense of Lorenzo Musetti, who has unfortunately faced defeat in his last seven finals.
The second-seeded Bublik demonstrated his impressive baseline skills and adaptability against Musetti's varied playing style, ultimately winning the match with scores of 7-6(2), 6-3. As a result of this triumph, Bublik is set to make his debut in the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings on Monday, marking a historic milestone as he becomes the first male tennis player from Kazakhstan to achieve this ranking.
Reflecting on his journey, Bublik expressed, "The only goal for this season was to achieve the Top 10, and in the very first week, I have won the title and made it there. If you had told me last April that this would happen, I would never have believed it. It’s such a joy, and I hope to maintain this momentum going forward."
Bublik has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence, particularly during the latter part of the previous season, having claimed titles in Halle, Gstaad, Kitzbuhel, and Hangzhou. Continuing his strong performance, the 28-year-old began the new year by dropping just one set throughout the ATP 250 event in Hong Kong.
On the other hand, Musetti was in pursuit of his first title since his victory in Naples back in 2022. Despite falling short again, the 23-year-old will still ascend into the Top 5 of the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time, joining the ranks of fellow Italians Jannik Sinner and Adriano Panatta in this elite group.
The first set was marked by tension and excitement, with Bublik delivering an extraordinary shot at 2/2 in the tie-break, hitting a backhand winner that shifted the momentum in his favor. He then proceeded to dominate the next four points to secure the opening set. Even after temporarily losing a break advantage in the second set, Bublik managed to maintain control, enhancing his Head2Head record against Musetti to 3-1.
